ICANN to OK custom TLDs

ICANN will dramatically expand the world of top-level domains by essentially letting companies and organizations buy their own TLDs, the Journal reports.

As the article points out, .ibm and .ebay make handy TLDs, as do .nyc, .sf, and .aclu. it’s not just for anyone though – it will cost $100,000 to $500,000 to land one of these babies, which may be enough to alleviate concerns of cybersquatting TLDs.

“This is the biggest change to the way people find each other on the Internet since its inception,” said Paul Twomey, ICANN’s president and chief executive officer. … “What we’re effectively doing is opening up huge amounts of online real estate,” he said.

Approval expected Thursday.

I am amazed that some are so complacent about this change, which means we might as well never have had the previous group of suffixes anyway. We have now lost the potential to hold on to any semblanc... (Read the rest)
